London is the largest and capital city of the United Kingdom.

London is also the largest city in the European Union.

The estimated population of Greater London on 1 January 2005 was 7,421,328 with a metropolitan area population of over 12.5 million.

London's population includes a very diverse range of peoples, cultures and religions, making it one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Europe and, indeed, the world. Over 300 languages are spoken in London, making the capital the most linguistically diverse city in the world.

London is the home of many global institutions, organisations and companies, and as such retains a leading role in global affairs.

London has a great number of important buildings, including world-famous museums, theatres, concert halls, airports, railway stations, palaces, and offices. London is also home to foreign embassies, consulates and High Commissions.

London will host the Olympic Games in 2012.
